彭德怀派彭雪枫将军到第六师任政治委员。将军到任后深入基层，与红军战士和各级指战员交心谈心，从改善官兵关系着手，消除军阀作风和影响。很快，红六师精神面貌和战斗力出现质的变化，荣获“铁师”的称号。

Peng Dehuai sent General Peng Xuefeng to the 6th Division as a political commissar. The general went to the grassroots after his arrival and talked to Red Army soldiers and commanders at all levels, starting with improving relations between officers and soldiers to eliminate warlords’ influence. Soon, the Sixth Division saw a qualitative change both in its spirit and fighting capability, winning the honor of “Iron Division”.
